Tittens

Sculpture/ Fiber
2013
Materials
Yarn (two colors), hook to hang from wall. They have to be arranged and fluffed a bit when installed.
Description
Breasts, as part of the female human body, are both functional and fetishistic. Controversy in Western culture surrounds both of these aspects. In creating the piece, Tittens, I wanted to explore those concerns as well as just making a part of the female body more visible/acceptable. I've seen hats similarly made for babies to wear while they breastfeed as a sort of humorous response to those that consider nursing obscene simply because of its relation to the body and wish it to be a hidden/private act much like sexual intercourse. In fact, I worked out my own version but got the initial pattern for this piece from a similar hat by Crochet Geek (all appropriate credit to them). My Tittens's relationship to the baby hats and my current interest in exploring fiber's potential as a sculptural and fine art medium worked well for this project. I am also continuing with this work to explore my interest in fragmenting the body and humor. By seeing the breast forms hang like ordinary mittens, I hope my Tittens might catch the viewer off guard in a nostalgic and then humorous and conceptual way.
A related project is Sometimes she felt just like Pinocchio.
